The SME Go Green programme, implemented by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) with support from the European Union, aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises in Bosnia and Herzegovina in their green transition and efforts to improve competitiveness. The objective of the programme is to enable companies to access financing for investments in sustainable technologies, energy efficiency, and business modernization, thereby increasing productivity and alignment with European Union standards related to environmental protection and climate policy.
The programme is part of a regional initiative for the Western Balkans through which the EBRD provides financial resources to local partner banks, which then extend loans to SMEs for green investments. In the first phase of the programme, up to EUR 120 million in financing is planned to be made available through partner financial institutions in the region, with additional support provided through EU grant funding.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the programme is implemented in cooperation with local financial institutions that enable companies to access credit lines for green investments. Partner banks cooperating with the EBRD within similar programmes include:
- UniCredit Bank d.d. Mostar – which has received a credit line of approximately EUR 7 million to finance green projects of SMEs in Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Raiffeisen Bank d.d. Bosnia and Herzegovina – which has also received an EBRD credit line for financing sustainable SME investments
- NLB Banka Sarajevo – which cooperates with the EBRD in financing energy efficiency and green investment projects
Through these partner banks, companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina can obtain financing for projects contributing to the green transition. Eligible investments include modernization of production equipment, introduction of technologies that reduce energy consumption and emissions, investments in renewable energy sources, optimization of resource use, and improvements in production processes in line with sustainable business practices.
In addition to loans, the programme also includes EU grant incentives awarded after successful implementation of investments. These grants can cover a portion of investment costs and further encourage companies to invest in sustainable technologies and business modernization.
An important component of the programme is technical assistance for companies, including advisory support in preparing investment projects, identifying the most efficient technological solutions, and supporting project implementation. In this way, SME Go Green helps enterprises improve operations, reduce energy and resource costs, and strengthen competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
