Industrial Symbiosis and Circular Solutions for Strengthening the Competitiveness of SMEs in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Industrial symbiosis is an approach in which companies cooperate in order to use by-products, waste, or surplus energy from one production process as a resource in another. Instead of treating materials and energy as waste that must be disposed of, they are reintroduced into production processes and generate additional economic value. This model is increasingly recognized as an important element of the circular economy because it enables more efficient use of resources, reduces production costs, and decreases environmental pressure.

For industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the concept of industrial symbiosis is particularly relevant because many manufacturing sectors already generate significant quantities of by-products that could be reused. Rather than being treated as waste, these materials can become input resources for other companies or for different processes within the same sector. Such an approach reduces the costs of waste disposal while also lowering the costs of procuring new raw materials.

There is especially strong potential in sectors that are already closely connected to export markets. In the wood industry, one of the most important export sectors in Bosnia and Herzegovina, sawdust, bark, and other residues from wood processing are already used to produce pellets, briquettes, and energy. However, the opportunities are much broader and include the production of biocomposites, panels, or other materials that can be used in construction or furniture manufacturing. Such solutions enable companies to reduce raw material costs while increasing the overall utilization of wood resources.

Similar potential exists in the metal industry. Metal residues generated during production processes can be reused as raw material in other production cycles or through cooperation with companies engaged in metal processing. Improved management of material flows can reduce the costs of primary raw materials and increase production efficiency. For companies operating within international supply chains, this can represent an additional advantage, as buyers increasingly request information about efficient material use and waste reduction.

In the food industry, there is also significant potential for utilizing organic residues generated during food processing. Such materials can be used in the production of biogas, compost, or animal feed, thereby reducing waste management costs while creating additional value. In many European countries, similar forms of cooperation between companies have led to the development of local industrial ecosystems where resources are used far more efficiently.

For export-oriented companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this approach has an additional dimension because the requirements of the European market increasingly focus on efficient resource use and waste reduction. Buyers and partners in the European Union are increasingly evaluating suppliers based on their ability to manage materials and energy effectively, and circular approaches can help companies demonstrate concrete results in this area. Companies that reduce waste, reuse materials, and optimize production processes are better positioned to meet market expectations and strengthen their competitiveness.

For many companies, the first step toward industrial symbiosis is gaining a clearer understanding of their own material and waste flows. When companies identify where by-products are generated and understand their composition, it becomes much easier to find potential partners or develop new solutions for their use. Chambers of commerce, industrial clusters, and development initiatives can play an important role in this process by connecting companies and facilitating the exchange of information on available resources.

The development of industrial symbiosis represents an opportunity to use existing resources in the industry of Bosnia and Herzegovina more efficiently and to create new business models through cooperation between companies. In an environment where the European market increasingly values sustainability, efficient management of materials and energy is becoming an important element of the long-term competitiveness of companies operating within export value chains.
