
In recent years, an increasing number of industrial companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina have begun to seriously consider the possibility of generating their own electricity, primarily through solar power plants installed on the roofs of production facilities. This growing interest is not only the result of rising energy prices, but also reflects a broader shift in how industry plans costs, manages risks, and responds to the expectations of customers, particularly in the European Union market.
For many manufacturing companies, electricity represents one of the most significant operational costs. In sectors such as metal processing, wood processing, construction materials production, and the food industry, energy is directly linked to the operation of production lines, compressor systems, ventilation, cooling, and other technological processes. When energy prices fluctuate significantly or when there is uncertainty regarding long-term costs, companies begin to seek ways to bring part of that risk under their own control.
For this reason, solar power plants installed on industrial facilities are increasingly viewed as part of business strategy rather than merely as environmental investments. Industrial buildings often have large roof areas that are technically suitable for the installation of photovoltaic systems. When such systems are designed to cover part of the daily energy consumption in production, the electricity generated can be immediately used within the facility, reducing the amount of energy purchased from the grid.
A particularly important factor for industry is that solar energy production largely coincides with the operating hours of manufacturing facilities. In many factories, the highest electricity consumption occurs during the daytime, when production is active and when solar installations generate the largest amount of electricity. As a result, industrial systems can achieve a relatively high level of self-consumption of the generated energy, which significantly improves the economic viability of such projects.
In recent years, relationships with customers—especially in export-oriented sectors—have also become an important factor. A growing number of European companies request information about the origin of energy and the emissions associated with the production of goods within their supply chains. Companies that can demonstrate that part of their energy comes from renewable sources often gain an additional advantage in business relationships, as buyers use such information in their own emissions and sustainability reporting.
Alongside economic and market considerations, the regulatory framework also plays an important role. In recent years, Bosnia and Herzegovina has introduced certain legislative changes that provide a clearer legal framework for electricity generation for self-consumption. This enables companies to install power plants primarily intended to cover their own consumption, with defined rules for any surplus electricity that may be delivered to the grid.
However, experience shows that the success of such projects does not depend solely on regulation or the availability of technology. The key factor is thorough project preparation. This primarily includes a detailed analysis of the company’s electricity consumption, an understanding of daily and seasonal consumption patterns, an assessment of the technical characteristics of the facility, and an evaluation of grid connection possibilities.
In many cases, companies gain a much clearer understanding of their own energy consumption only through such analyses. It often becomes evident that there are significant differences between total annual consumption and the way energy is used during the day or across production cycles. These insights are essential for correctly sizing a power plant, since an oversized system may result in energy surpluses that are not always easy to sell, while an undersized system fails to utilize the full potential of the available infrastructure.
For industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina, on-site electricity generation primarily represents a tool for more stable business planning. In an environment where energy prices, customer requirements, and regulatory frameworks are becoming increasingly complex, companies that have greater control over their energy consumption and energy sources also have greater flexibility in making business decisions.
For this reason, interest in such projects within industry is steadily increasing. What only a few years ago was limited to pioneering projects implemented by a small number of companies is now becoming a topic seriously considered by many firms seeking to reduce energy costs in the long term, increase business stability, and respond more effectively to evolving market expectations.
