Recycling has become a symbol of our concern for the environment. Sorting waste, color-coded bins, and messages about “responsible behavior” create the feeling that we are doing what is necessary. Within that picture lies a comforting conclusion: if we separate waste properly, the problem is solved. However, this is precisely where the greatest misconception of the modern approach to waste lies.
Recycling does not mean the disappearance of waste. It means its processing—and only of the portion that is technically, economically, and commercially feasible to reuse. A large share of the materials that end up in bins every day cannot be recycled indefinitely. Plastics lose quality, paper can be processed only a limited number of times, and complex materials often have no realistic path back into production at all.
More importantly, recycling does not address the root cause of the problem. It deals with the consequence—what has already become waste. The system of production and consumption, which constantly generates new quantities of material, remains untouched. No matter how efficient we are at sorting, the volume of waste continues to grow because consumption itself keeps growing.

In public discourse, the fact is often glossed over that even the most advanced recycling systems leave a significant portion of waste with no recycling value. That portion does not disappear. It is either landfilled or directed into processes aimed at reducing volume and recovering energy. Ignoring this remainder creates the false impression that recycling is a final solution, rather than just one step within a much more complex system.
There is also a psychological effect of recycling. When we believe that waste has been “taken care of,” we lose the motivation to question the bigger picture. We continue to buy, use, and discard with the same ease, convinced that we have already fulfilled our share of responsibility. In this way, recycling can paradoxically prolong the life of the linear model instead of challenging it.
Waste does not disappear on its own because it is the result of how the system is designed. Every product that enters use also carries future waste within it. The circular economy does not start from the assumption that everything can be recycled, but from the fact that the entire life cycle of materials must be managed—from design, through use, to end of life.
In this context, solutions that address the unavoidable remainder of waste are not a sign of failure, but a sign of system maturity. Acknowledging that recycling has limits opens space for realistic, rather than idealized, solutions. Only when we accept that some waste will always remain can we speak of a system that is ready to deal with that remainder responsibly.
Recycling is important. Without it, the pressure on resources would be even greater. But it is not enough. A sustainable system does not rely on a single measure, but on understanding the entire flow of materials and energy. As long as we believe that waste will disappear on its own, we will continue to build solutions that look good on paper but do not work in reality.
