What are
Business service providers and HUBs?

A Business Service Provider, as the project sees it, is a private company, organization or institution that offers certain services to MSMEs to improve their business. Such services can be from various areas essential for the business of MSMEs, such as organizational structure, production processes, product development, sales, procurement, marketing, and others.

Types of Business Support Organizations:

  • Government Agencies – These are often public-sector organizations that support businesses with grants, funding, or regulation guidance.
  • Non-Profit Organizations – These groups provide business support services without seeking profit. They often focus on certain sectors, such as minority or women-owned businesses.
  • Private Consulting Firms – Businesses that provide expert advice on a variety of business challenges, from operations to marketing.
  • Chambers of Commerce – They help local and regional businesses through networking, advocacy, and consulting.
  • Industry-Specific Associations – These organizations serve particular industries or business sectors, offering resources tailored to the unique needs of those businesses.
  • Incubators and Accelerators – These organizations help startups and early-stage companies by providing mentorship, office space, funding, and other resources.
  • Business Networking Organizations – These are focused on helping businesses form relationships with other companies or professionals to expand their reach and capabilities.

Under the term “hub,” the project refers to a Digital Innovation Hub (DIH), which may consist of a single business service provider or a coordinated group of providers with complementary expertise and a public interest mission. The hub offers a range of services and activities that support SMEs in their digital transformation, green transition, and innovation efforts, acting as a central point of contact and expertise.

Why are they important?

Business service providers are crucial to a country’s economy because they support business growth by offering specialized services. They help businesses become more efficient, foster innovation, digitalization, and green transition, and finally enhance competitiveness. At the end, they strengthen the overall business environment, making the economy more dynamic and resilient.

Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) can help any company—small or large, high-tech or not—to take advantage of digital opportunities. DIHs are one-stop shops that support companies in becoming more competitive with respect to their business/production processes, products, or services by using digital technologies.

DIHs provide access to technical expertise and experimentation, so that companies can “test before invest”. They also provide support in finding investments, offer innovative services to MSMEs such as financing advice, training and skills development that are needed for a successful digital transformation. On top of it DIHs are supporting the improvement of the innovation ecosystem by networking partners from the country and abroad.

What will be done with them and why?

The project is goint to cooperate with business service providers (BSPs) and/or Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) in different ways, such as:

Partnering with BSPs/DIHs who specialize in digital transformation and sustainability.

BSPs/DIHs can offer trainings for the ecosystem on new digital tools or sustainable practices.

Work together on innovative projects aimed at integrating sustainable practices or digital solutions in MSMEs.

Establish relationships where the BSPs/DIHs continually support the digital and green transformation journey of MSMEs.

Promotion of sustainable and digital transformation of MSMEs countrywide.
