Digital and Green Skills – What are they and why are they crucial for youth?

Although often mentioned separately, they are increasingly interconnected – since solutions to environmental challenges almost always involve digital tools and technologies.
What are digital skills?
These are abilities that enable the effective and safe use of digital technologies:
- working on computers and mobile devices
- using the internet and online services
- basic programming, data analysis
- digital communication and security
And what are green skills?
These are knowledge and behaviors that enable responsible resource use and contribute to sustainability:
- understanding climate change and ecological challenges
- energy efficiency, waste management, recycling
- eco-design and awareness of the impact of everyday decisions

Why are they important for young people?
Because they are inheriting a world that is already digitalized – and in ecological crisis. The jobs of the future, as well as daily life, will require the ability to navigate digital environments and a responsible attitude toward nature and society.
That’s why schools should become places where these skills are adopted from the earliest age, through practical examples, interdisciplinary tasks, and real-world connections.
Where is the Education system (still) not keeping pace?
Although there is growing talk about digital and green competencies, the education system in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region still lags behind the needs of modern society and the labor market. The problem isn’t just a lack of equipment – it’s also about outdated thinking, outdated teaching structures, and priorities that don’t align with today’s demands.
Outdated Curricula
Most curricula are still focused on theory, factual knowledge, and rote memorization. Interdisciplinary approaches, project-based learning, and real-world problem-solving are still the exception rather than the rule.
Insufficient support for Teachers
Teachers often face a lack of training and resources for adopting new approaches. Many don’t have the opportunity or time for additional education on digital tools or sustainable practices, and systemic support is lacking.
Uneven digital infrastructure
While some schools have smart boards, robotics programs, and STEM labs, others still lack basic technical conditions for digital teaching. The digital gap between schools (and within them) creates unequal opportunities for students.
Superficial or symbolic coverage of green topics
