In an era where technology evolves faster than ever and climate change becomes an everyday reality, the education system is gaining a new, crucial role \u2013 to prepare young people for a world in constant transformation.<\/strong> Schools are no longer just places where facts and formulas are taught; they are becoming the first stop on the path to digitally and environmentally literate generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The labor market increasingly demands individuals who know how to use digital tools, understand sustainability principles, and can adapt to change. At the same time, young people are facing growing uncertainty regarding their careers, the environment, and their future. If schools don’t keep up with these changes \u2013 who will prepare them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article explores how today’s education system responds to these challenges, where it falls short, and what can be done to make digital and green skills an integral part of every young person’s schooling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital and Green Skills \u2013 What are they and why are they crucial for youth?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital and green skills<\/strong> are becoming essential competencies for anyone wanting to be ready for life and work in the 21st century. Although often mentioned separately, they are increasingly interconnected \u2013 since solutions to environmental challenges almost always involve digital tools and technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are digital skills?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are abilities that enable the effective and safe use of digital technologies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • working on computers and mobile devices<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • using the internet and online services<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • basic programming, data analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • digital communication and security<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    And what are green skills?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These are knowledge and behaviors that enable responsible resource use and contribute to sustainability:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • understanding climate change and ecological challenges<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • energy efficiency, waste management, recycling<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • eco-design and awareness of the impact of everyday decisions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Why are they important for young people?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Because they are inheriting a world that is already digitalized \u2013 and in ecological crisis. The jobs of the future, as well as daily life, will require the ability to navigate digital environments and a responsible attitude toward nature and society.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That\u2019s why schools should become places where these skills are adopted from the earliest age<\/strong>, through practical examples, interdisciplinary tasks, and real-world connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Where is the Education system (still) not keeping pace?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Although there is growing talk about digital and green competencies, the education system in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region still lags<\/strong> behind the needs of modern society and the labor market. The problem isn\u2019t just a lack of equipment \u2013 it’s also about outdated thinking, outdated teaching structures, and priorities that don\u2019t align with today\u2019s demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Outdated Curricula<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Most curricula are still focused on theory, factual knowledge, and rote memorization. Interdisciplinary approaches, project-based learning, and real-world problem-solving<\/strong> are still the exception rather than the rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Insufficient support for Teachers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Teachers often face a lack of training and resources for adopting new approaches. Many don\u2019t have the opportunity or time for additional education on digital tools or sustainable practices, and systemic support is lacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Uneven digital infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      While some schools have smart boards, robotics programs, and STEM labs, others still lack basic technical conditions for digital teaching. The digital gap between schools<\/strong> (and within them) creates unequal opportunities for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Superficial or symbolic coverage of green topics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Ecology is often reduced to a few biology lessons and schoolyard cleanup campaigns. It is rarely linked with economics, technology, civics, or entrepreneurship \u2013 and almost never becomes part of the broader school culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Without serious adaptation of the system, young people will continue to leave school with a diploma \u2013 but without the practical knowledge needed for work and life in a digital-green economy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Recommendations: What can We improve?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If we want the education system to become the true foundation of the digital-green transition, action is needed at multiple levels \u2013 strategically, practically, and collectively<\/strong>. Here are concrete recommendations for key stakeholders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      For education authorities and policymakers:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Modernize curricula<\/strong> \u2013 integrate digital competencies and sustainability themes across all subjects<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Ensure equal technical conditions for all schools<\/strong> \u2013 to reduce the digital divide<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Systematically invest in continuous teacher education<\/strong> \u2013 through accredited and practical training<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        For schools and principals:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        • Encourage team-based and project-oriented teaching<\/strong> \u2013 students learn best through hands-on practice and problem-solving<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Connect theory with real life<\/strong> \u2013 invite guest lecturers, use local examples, organize company visits<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Develop a digital and ecological school environment<\/strong> \u2013 through energy-saving measures, digital documentation, recycling, and online tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          For teachers and school staff:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Embrace lifelong learning<\/strong> \u2013 even small changes in teaching methods can have a big impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n

          • Use free digital tools and platforms<\/strong> \u2013 for teaching, evaluation, and student communication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            For the private sector and NGOs:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                If we want a sustainable future, we must start with Education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                The education system plays a key role in shaping a society capable of responding to the challenges of the digital age and climate crisis. If we want a strong economy, advanced technologies, and environmentally responsible communities \u2013 we must build them through our schools.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Digital literacy and green skills are not a luxury \u2013 they are basic knowledge<\/strong> that every child should acquire, regardless of whether they become a programmer, nurse, craftsman, or entrepreneur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                All stakeholders \u2013 teachers, parents, policymakers, employers \u2013 must act together. Change doesn\u2019t happen overnight, but every small initiative, project, or new lesson can be the beginning of a transformation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
