The amount of carbon dioxide has become the primary measure of success, the central indicator of progress, and the main criterion for assessing sustainability. Reducing emissions is undoubtedly important, but the problem arises when the entire transition is viewed exclusively through that one figure.

Societies and systems are far more complex than charts showing CO₂ levels. Energy, economic, and environmental challenges are interconnected, and focusing solely on emissions often conceals other issues that may be equally important in the long term. A system may reduce emissions while remaining unstable, dependent on imported resources, or incapable of managing its own waste. In such cases, the transition exists on paper, but not in reality.

The green transition is not only about what we produce, but also about how we manage resources. A society that continues to consume vast amounts of materials, generate increasing quantities of waste, and rely on a linear consumption model does not become sustainable simply because it uses a “cleaner” source of energy. Emissions are an important symptom of the problem, but they are not the only measure of a system’s health.

Another paradox of the modern transition is that some solutions can reduce emissions while simultaneously creating new forms of dependency. If an energy system relies on imported technologies, rare raw materials, or unstable supply chains, its vulnerability remains present—just in a different form. Sustainability means not only lower emissions, but also greater resilience to crises, disruptions, and long-term changes.

It is also important to consider the issue of land use and space. Large infrastructure projects may appear “green” in emissions statistics while having significant consequences for local communities, natural resources, or land-use patterns. When the transition is measured by a single figure, we lose the ability to see the bigger picture and the real impact of the decisions we make.

A green economy encompasses much more than energy transformation. It includes production methods, attitudes toward waste, product durability, local economic development, resource efficiency, and a society’s ability to function over the long term without continuously increasing pressure on the environment. Emissions are an important part of that picture, but they do not define it entirely.

It is particularly important to understand that sustainability is not the same as optimizing a single parameter. Systems that focus on only one objective often overlook balance. That is why a genuine green transition requires broader thinking—one that connects energy, resources, the economy, and social stability into a single, integrated framework.

Ultimately, the question is not only how much we have reduced emissions, but what kind of system we leave behind. Is it more resilient? Does it use resources more intelligently? Does it generate less waste? Can it function in a stable and sustainable manner over the long term? Only when we begin asking these questions does the green transition cease to be a statistical target and become a real transformation in the way society functions.

The Sustainable Economic Development and Employment Promotion Programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina (SEDEP), which supports vocational education and private sector development while promoting digital and green transformation, is jointly funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union (EU), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

When discussing the green transition, almost everything quickly comes down to a single word – emissions.

[42

post-4973","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-en
["GET
